About Fairbury, Nebraska

History
Fairbury was founded in 1869. It was named after Fairbury, Illinois, the former home of one of its founders, W.G. McDowell. The Oregon Trail passed close by Fairbury, and the wagon ruts of these early pioneers are still visible in some places.

Transportation
Fairbury is served by one major railroad, State Highways 8 and 15, U.S. Highway 136, a municipal airport with paved runway, and two truck lines.

Residents have access to a radio station and a weekly newspaper.

Fairbury is the county seat of Jefferson County. The mayor and city council members are elected.
Education
Fairbury has two public grade schools, and one public junior/senior high school.

Area farmers raise livestock, small grains, corn and forage.
Churches
Fairbury is home to 20 churches of different denominations.

Business and Industry
Fairbury has more than a dozen manufacturing firms which together employ nearly 400 workers. Principal manufactured products include brick and tile, specialty wood products, meat processing and garment manufacturing.
Medical Facilities
Jefferson Community Health Center is licensed for 33 acute care beds, 41 nursing home beds and offers a variety of specialty clinics, including a modern wellness center and physical therapy facility. Jefferson County is also served by one physician's clinic, Blue Valley Mental Health Center and Heritage Care Center.

Utilities
Fairbury maintains its own electrical department, deep well water system and sewage treatment plant. Natural gas is provided by Peoples Natural Gas. Telephone and internet service is provided by Aliant Communications.
Recreation
Facilities for outdoor recreation include four public parks, featuring Crystal Springs with two fishing lakes, one boating lake, camping facilities and historic Rock Creek Station. Other recreation opportunities include Fairbury Country Club, Jefferson County Historical Museum, a community building, six tennis courts, swimming pool, five ball parks, bowling alley, theater, public library and fairgrounds.
