Why Fellowship of Christian Athletes?

Why fellowship? There is a family atmosphere in athletics because athletes share common ideas of discipline, competition, joys and struggles, successes and failures.  FCA helps provide spiritual emphasis and perspective to the athletic family.
Hebrew 10:24-25 "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the day approaching."
Why Christian? There is a common thread which runs between sports and the Christian life.  The challenge and adventure of athletics is similar to the Christian life, and God cares about both.
I Timothy 4:8  "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
Why athletes? There are two reasons:  They have special needs relation to time, studies, peer pressure and relationships.  They also have special influence.  One student said: "I came to see my gods (athletes) but I saw their God and now He is my God."
Hebrews 12:1-2 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the thrown of God."

Who can join FCA?

Anyone in 9-12 grade can attend Fairbury FCA activities.  We don't have a strict membership.  You will be welcome any time even if you have never joined us before.  You do not have to participate in athletics.  However, our topics do center around sports and athletics so you will want to at least have an interest.

What do you do at FCA?

At huddle meetings we have three stages: warm-up, workout and wrap-up.  During the warm-up we play a game that is related to the topic of the night.  Then the workout is when we have a topic discussion, Bible study and question/reflection time.  Finally the wrap-up is when we pray together and share announcements.  Of course there is always food too!!

Why should I join FCA?

FCA is an opportunity to meet other students from Fairbury who want to grow in their Christian faith.  We are always learning from each other and the Bible.  We have a good time together and support on another along our faith journey.

This year we had exciting things happening at Death's Doorway.  Visitors came for a haunted house and watched a drama of what might happen after you die.  Ten of our students worked hard to memorize lines and blocking for the scenes.  In addition, many students were involved in the scary scene.  We had 399 visitors from the Fairbury area.  Admission required a can of food (see picture above) which led to a collection of 356 pounds to be donated to Blue Valley Community Action food pantry in Fairbury.

Fairbury FCA 2005-2006

This year we had a small, strong group.  Students involved with FCA were supportive of one another in their faith walk.  We had great discussions at huddle meetings.  The accountability carried through to the school day when they get to see each other in classes and the hallways.

We had more students involved in FCA than any previous years.  Numbers are not the most important thing, however, it is great to see lots of teenagers together talking about the Bible.

Fairbury FCA 2003-2004

We were busy in 2003-2004!  Students continue to enjoy regular huddle meetings and fun events!  Favorite topics have included "under the influence", the great outdoors, and NASCAR.  This year three students went to the Weekend of Champions and many students were involved in Death's Doorway.  To finish off the year we saw the movie The Passion of The Christ in April and a lock-in at the high school in May.

Fairbury FCA 2002-2003

The 2002-2003 school year continued with some traditional activities and added a few new events.  Five students went to the Weekend of Champions in Grand Island in November.  We held the third annual Superbowl party in January.  FCA continued to have regular huddle meetings on the the first Sunday of each month.  The big excitement that year was our involvement with the YouthNET Death's Doorway - haunted house.  If you were not one of the 432 people who passed through Death's Doorway in October you may have a sense of what it was like by viewing the pictures below.  Radical Youth Invasion was another exciting event held in January.  Fairbury students enjoyed getting to know the crew from RYI and invited them to come  back for a lock-in April 26-27.

Fairbury FCA 2001-2002

For the third year of FCA at Fairbury High School, we met on the first Sunday night of each month at 7 PM.  We had many new activites happening during the 2001-2002 school year.  Student athletes found out what a pumpkin has to do with being a Christian, went to the Weekend of Champions, had a Superbowl party and played frisbee golf.   Huddle meeting topics included a relationship with the coach, communication, Christian music and 20 things God can't do.  During the summer of 2002, the Fairbury FCA huddle sponsored a 3-on-3 basketball tournament during the first annual Youthnet StreetFEST.

Fairbury students wanted to start a new Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle in the fall of 1999.  Seven students went to a Weekend of Champions in Grand Island and came back to school all fired up to start their own huddle.  Throughout the year we had meetings on Tuesday nights at 7:00 twice a month.  At these meetings we started with a game and then gathered to talk about issues that were important in their life.  All meetings are student lead.  Other things we did included a "Fifth Quarter" after a home basketball game and we volunteered at a Say No to Drugs Parade in Fairbury.   During the summer of 2000, three students went to Estes Park, CO for a leadership camp.   They came back with many great ideas and loads of enthusiasm for the upcoming year!
