Johnny Appleseed

We celebrated Johnny Appleseed's
birthday on September 26th. John Chapman was born in Massachusetts
in 1774. He was an early settler of the Northwest Territory. This
was the area from which the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and
Illinois were later formed. Johnny's young apple trees were ready
for sale when the new settlers arrived. He later became known as
the Apple Tree Man, or Johnny Appleseed. He would plant small acres
of trees, but also large plots of land. He walked to most of the
places he planted his seeds. There is no way to estimate how many
millions of seeds he planted in the hundreds of nurseries he
created. There are many legends surrounding the life of John Chapman. We read many stories about him and then designed our own images of him. |
