Food Poetry

Breads and Cereals

Breads and cereals start from seeds
Of grasses farmers grow;
They’re all ground up and mixed with eggs
And other flavors for dough.

The crust of pies and dinner rolls,
And noodles of chicken soup,
Doughnuts, spaghetti, and Cream of Wheat
Are in the bread and cereals group.

Dairy Products

Dairy products are food from the farm
That came from pasture and coop;
Milk from cows and eggs from hens
Are part of the dairy group

We eat our eggs cooked soft or hard,
Scrambled, poached, or steamed;
From milk we make our cottage cheese,
Our yogurt, and ice cream.

Vegetables and Fruits

The food we like to eat that grows
On vines and bushes and trees
Are vegetables and fruits, my friend,
Like cherries, grapes, and peas.

Apples and oranges and peaches are fruits,
And so are tangerines.
Lettuce and carrots are vegetables,
Like squash and lima beans.

Meat and Alternates

Cows and pigs and sheep make up
The meat that we eat.
Spare ribs, steak, or hamburgers,
We call this cooked food "meat"

"Poultry" refers to birds we eat,
Like chicken, duck, and turkey.
"Seafood" is fish and other things
That swim in water murky.

We're Going To Make A Cake
(The Farmer in the Dell)

We're going to make a cake,
We're going to make a cake;
We're going to make it really big,
Because we all like cake.

Flour in the bowl,
Flour in the bowl;
Stir it with a great big spoon,
Flour in the bowl.
(continue with sugar, salt, eggs, milk)

Put it in the oven,
Put it in the oven;
Take care not to slam the door,
Until it's nicely cooked.

Icing on the top,
Icing on the top;
Spread it with a big, flat knife,
Icing on the top.

We all have a piece,
We all have a piece;
Some for you and some for me,
We all have a piece.

I Like To Eat!

I like hotdogs
I like beans,
I like eating in my jeans.

I like French fries
I like ham
I like eating in my jams.

I like cookies,
I like pie,
I like eating in my tie.

I like bagels,
I like lox
I like eating in my socks

I like pancakes,
I like molasses
I like eating in my glasses.

I like veggies
I like fruit
I like eating in my boots.

Oodles of Noodles

I love noodles. Give me oodles.
Make a mound up to the sun.
Noodles are my favorite foodles.
I eat noodles by the ton.

Egg-Thoughts

I do not like the way you slide,
I do not like your soft inside,
I do not like your many ways,
And I could do for many days,
Without a soft-boiled egg.

Mix a pancake,

Stir a pancake,
Pop it in the pan;
Fry a pancake,
Toss a pancake,
Catch it if you can!

By Christina Rossetti

So Good For You

Milk, fruits, and vegetables,
Meat and brown bread too.
Try to have some every day,
They're so good for you!

By Elizabeth McKinnon

Wash your hands,
Before you eat,
A good health rule,
That's hard to beat.
For better work,
For better play,
Eat three good meals,
Every day.

I Really Love My Veggies

I really love my veggies.
I seldom make a fuss.
I only ever draw the line
At cooked asparagus!

Good Foods

Milk, meat, bread, fruit,
These will help me grow
To be strong and tall and well,
Healthy from head to toe!

By Barbara Robinson

Healthy Habits

Be sure to eat nutritious foods
To keep your body strong.
Too much candy, junk, and pop
Can do your body wrong.

Be sure to get a lot of sleep
Each and every night.
You'll feel good in the morning
When your nighttime's right.

Be sure to wash both your hands
And use a lot of soap.
Don't give cold and flu germs
Any kind of hope.

By Susan M. Paprock

Vegetables

Vegetables are plants we eat,
They're so good, what a treat!
Carrots, beans, and broccoli -
They help us grow so healthily.

By Gayle Bittinger

How do you make a pizza grow?

How do you make a pizza grow?
You pound and you pull and you stretch the dough
And throw in tomatoes and oregano.
Pizza platter for twenty-two
Pour on the oil and soak it through.
Pizza slices for forty-four,
Chop up onions, make some more.
Pizza pie for sixty-six
With mozzarella cheese that melts and sticks.
Pizza, pizza for ninety-nine
With pepperoni sausage ground-up fine.
Pizza, pizza stretch the dough.
Pizza, pizza make it grow.

                    By Eve Merriam

Pizza Song
(Oscar Mayer song)

Oh. I wish I were a pepperoni pizza.
That is what I truly want to be.
But if I were a pepperoni pizza,
There would soon be nothing left of me!

P-I-Z-Z-A
(Bingo)

There is a food I like to eat
And pizza is its name-o.
P-I-Z-Z-A
P-I-Z-Z-A
P-I-Z-Z-A
And pizza is its name-o

Pat-A-Cake

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man
Bake me a pizza-- the best that you can.
Peppers, tomato sauce, slivers of cheese----
All on a crust of whole wheat, if you please.

by Ginny Winter

Are You Eating
(Are You Sleeping)

Are you eating, are you eating
Healthy foods, healthy foods?
For your body needs them, for your body needs them
Everyday, Everyday.

Eat Them Everyday
(Row Row Row Your Boat)

Milk, milk, eggs and cheese
Fruits and vegetables
Meat and breads and cereals
Eat them everyday.

M&M's

When we eat our M and M's
We eat the blue ones last.
We suck them very slowly,
We crunch them very fast.

We never eat the chocolate,
We always eat the shell.
When we eat our M and M's
We eat them very well.

Mix a Pancake

Mix a Pancake,
Stir a Pancake,
Pop it in the pan;
Fry the pancake,
Toss the pancake-
Catch it if you can.

by Christina Rossetti

I eat apples-
crunch, crunch, crunch
I eat sandwiches-
munch, munch, munch
I eat lollipops-
lick, lick, lick
But I eat ice cream
quick, quick, quick!

Spaghetti! Spaghetti

Spaghetti! spaghetti!
You're wonderful stuff
 I love you spaghetti,
I can't get enough. You're covered with sauce
and you're sprinkled with cheese
Spaghetti, spaghetti
Oh, give me some please

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!
I love you a lot
You're slishy, you're sloshy
delicious and hot
I gobble you down
Oh, can't get enough
spaghetti! spaghetti
You're wonderful stuff

by Jack Prelutsky

Banananananananana

I thought I'd win the spelling bee
And get right to the top
But I started to spell "banana"
And I didn't know when to stop.

by William Cole

Lunch Box

Lunch box, lunch box
what's for lunch?
Peanut butter sandwich
and celery to crunch
Carrots and banana
and an apple to munch.
A bite and a bite
and a bite and a BITE
Now I'm heavy
and my lunchbox is light.

by Eve Merriam

Fries and Ketchup
(Allouette)

Fries and ketchup, I like fires and ketchup
Fires and ketchup, they're so good for me.

First, you put them on your nose
Yes, you put them on your nose,
On your nose, on your nose, ooooh.

Next you put them on your ______,
(add in different body parts for each verse.)

"Flip"...The Pancake

My mom made yummy pancakes
One cold wintry day.
I watched her mix and stir and whirl
The pancakes every way.

She spooned some of the batter
Into the skillet hot.
It sizzled and it bubbled
Then out of the pan it shot!

Shed tossed my pancake into the air!
It didn't even drip.
And when it landed on my plate,
I named my pancake "Flip."
