Castles

Your Castle Under Construction

Research the different styles of castles built during the Medieval time period.  Choose one or two castles that catch your eye and hold your interest.  This will be the basis for the castle in your new kingdom.  You will create a castle blueprint from one or more of the castles you choose to research. Your blueprint will have the various parts of the castle labeled.  You will turn in the floor plan to the teacher for review by Day Two. You will also compile these drawings and your journal writings in your portfolio to be presented to your classmates.

After the floor plan is approved, you will complete a castle design/history report and blueprint of your new castle which you will use to create a replica of the new castle for your kingdom. You will present your castle replica to the class on the final day of the project.  Please include the materials you will be using to create your replica.

While doing your research you will need to individually record your answers to the following questions in your journal:

What are the different castle styles of the time period?

What building materials will be used to construct your castle?

Would you like to live in a castle? Why or Why not?

Chivalry and History

OVERVIEW:

The Medieval times were an era filled with armor, chivalry, knights and ornate crests. In the fourth century A.D. the Roman Empire fell and Europe was invaded by various Barbarian Tribes. Because of this, powerful local lords and their mounted warriors offered to protect peasants. In return for the protection, the peasants became the serfs . All of these lords were committed to oaths of loyalty. By the 11th Century, the new social order of feudalism was formed with armored knights who served a lord, and lords who were served by serfs.

TASK:

You will learn more about the chivalry of Medieval times. To do this you will need to research and complete an outline of the social structure of the times and design a crest and flag. You will present your crest and flag to your classmates during your PowerPoint presentation. You will answer a series of questions to help you reflect on what you have discovered and how it relates to your life. Remember to take your time in researching and don't forget that the library is an excellent source for information.

SOCIAL STRUCTURE TREE: Research the social structure of the Feudal Life. Present it in the format of a ladder, tree or some other object that has various levels by Day 7--BE CREATIVE! Use the following links to better understand the social structure of the time.

Social Structure

How do King Arthur and His Knights fit into feudal life? They followed an ideal code of behavior called chivalry. Chivalry required the knight to pledge his loyalty to his lord, to protect women, and to behave in an honorable way. This ideal characterizes this period of history that is gone but not forgotten.

Answer the following questions in your journal.

  1. What are the rules you follow for good behavior?
  2. How are they different from the code of chivalry?
  3. Do you feel that our world would be a better place if chivalry still existed? Why?
  4. Pretend it does exist, now tell of one aspect of life that would be different today? Why?
  5. How does our society today still have a defined social structure?

Back to Roles

CREST & FLAG: In this era, knights decorated their shields. It has been said that they did this because the helmets and face guards they wore made the knights difficult to recognize either as friend or foe. The fully decorated shield is known as a coat of arms.  Only one coat of arms was carried by a knight, and this was passed to the oldest son when the knight died. The shield reflected the nobility and history of it's owner. Quite often the symbols were used on flags and clothing. Your job is to create, by Day 8, a diagram of a crest that explains the meaning of your symbols and why you chose them. Then create a model of your crest and flag to display during your presentation. Remember it might be helpful to use some of the same elements on your crest and flag. You will find examples in the next few links.
